Skaneateles isn’t exactly known as a Mexican food destination. But Elephant and The Dove is quietly changing that. The restaurant sits right in the heart of the village on East Genesee Street, and it’s one of those places that feels a little unexpected — in the best possible way.
The name itself carries a creative story. The owners named it after legendary Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. So the whole place channels that same sense of boldness and personality — from the unique interior design right through to the food on the plate.
The menu hits all the right notes. It’s generous, flavourful, and varied enough that everyone at the table will find something they’re excited about. The chile relleno with spicy rojo sauce has become a firm fan favourite. Similarly, the chicken tortilla soup is the kind of thing you’ll think about on the drive home. The tacos — whether you go for the birria or the spicy cauliflower — are the real deal. The kitchen also looks after vegetarians and vegans particularly well, which isn’t always a given in a small lakeside town.
The bar program is equally worth your attention. The margaritas draw consistent praise. And with weekly specials like Margarita Mondays and a Taco Dinner for Two on Thursdays, there’s always a good reason to plan your visit around a night here.
The space spans three floors and radiates warmth throughout. It’s lively without being overwhelming, and the staff have a way of making you feel like a regular even on your first visit. The kitchen even brings in live music to round things out.
Adam Weitsman — local entrepreneur and philanthropist — owns Elephant and The Dove, and it’s another example of his knack for giving a community exactly what it needs. Find them at 9 East Genesee Street. They’re open Monday, Thursday and Friday from 11:30am to 8:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday until 9:30pm. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
