There are some restaurants that transport you the moment you walk in. Joelle’s French Bistro is one of them. It sits on State Street Road, a short drive from the village. And it’s the kind of place you’d expect to stumble across in the French countryside — warm, unhurried, and quietly exceptional.
What makes Joelle’s special is that it’s genuinely authentic. The menu weaves together classic French cuisine with Moroccan influences that give it a personality all its own. The duck confit is the stuff of local legend. The escargot, meanwhile, arrives swimming in garlicky butter the way it should. Similarly, the Moroccan steamed mussels are the kind of dish that makes you reconsider everything you thought you knew about mussels. The beef bourguignon with crispy polenta frites is also outstanding. In addition, the fresh daily catch is always worth ordering. Many of the herbs and ingredients come straight from the restaurant’s own garden, and you can taste the freshness throughout.
When the weather is kind, the outdoor patio is the place to be. It’s a beautiful setting that makes a great meal feel even more special. Just bring bug spray if you’re staying into the evening — this is Central New York after all. Inside, however, the atmosphere is equally cozy and relaxed. Furthermore, the wine list offers plenty of excellent French options at reasonable prices.
Joelle’s rewards a long, leisurely dinner. As a result, don’t come in a rush. The service is warm and attentive, and the staff genuinely care about your experience. Moreover, the consistency here year after year is remarkable — guests who have been coming since the early 2000s say it only gets better.
Finally, you’ll find them at 4423 State Street Road. They’re open Fridays and Saturdays only, from 5:30pm to 8pm. Reservations are recommended — call (315) 685-3063 to book your table.
