Some of the best views of Skaneateles Lake can’t be seen from the shore at all. They’re only visible from the water — and that’s exactly where Mid-Lakes Navigation comes in. Operating out of Jordan Street in the village since 1969, Mid-Lakes is one of those local institutions that earns its reputation year after year simply by delivering a genuinely memorable experience.
The fleet of beautiful antique boats is the first thing that captures your attention. These are not modern tourist vessels. They have character, history, and a charm that sets the whole experience apart from the moment you step aboard.
There are several ways to enjoy the lake with Mid-Lakes. The most unique — and arguably the most beloved — is the U.S. Mailboat Cruise. Skaneateles is one of the last places in the United States where the post office still delivers mail by water. On this three-hour cruise, you ride along as the crew actually delivers mail to lakeside homes, stopping at docks along the way while a knowledgeable narrator fills you in on the history, geology, and residents of the lake. It’s equal parts local colour and genuine adventure. Furthermore, the homes along the shore — grand, beautiful, and completely invisible from the road — make for a fascinating tour all on their own.
For something more relaxed, the sightseeing cruises offer a shorter introduction to the lake. The dinner cruise, meanwhile, is a popular choice for a special evening — catered by the Sherwood Inn and served on the water as the sun sets over the hills. The cocktail cruise features local breweries, wineries, and distilleries. And for something truly special, private charters are available for groups.
Find them at 11 Jordan Street, Skaneateles. Cruises run seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially for the Mailboat and dinner cruises.
