When Skaneateles gets snow on the ground and the air turns sharp, Greek Peak Mountain Resort is right there waiting — about a 45 minute drive away in Cortland County. And what’s particularly great about it is that you don’t need snow to make the trip worthwhile. Greek Peak has quietly become one of Central New York’s best year-round destinations.
In winter, the mountain earns its keep. It’s the largest ski area in Central New York, with 55 trails spanning beginner to expert terrain. The snowmaking team is seriously impressive — they were crowned national champions in SAM Magazine’s snowmaking competition in 2024 — which means the slopes stay in great shape even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Night skiing runs seven days a week, the terrain parks keep things interesting for all ages, and the tubing center with up to 20 lanes is a genuine crowd-pleaser for families. There’s also a full Nordic centre with groomed cross-country and snowshoe trails for those who prefer something quieter.
Come warmer weather, the mountain transforms. The Adventure Center opens up a whole other side of Greek Peak. Four tandem zip lines send you flying over the hillside. The Nor’easter Mountain Coaster is the kind of thing that makes adults feel like kids again. A high ropes course tests your nerve. And lift-served mountain biking draws riders from across the region to the trails.
Then there’s Hope Lake Lodge — right across from the ski area — which houses a 41,000-square-foot indoor water park, a spa, and a full hotel. On a rainy day in the Finger Lakes, it’s practically unbeatable as a family option. The Trax Pub & Grill on the mountain serves solid food too, and the burgers in particular have developed a following.
Find them at 2000 State Route 392, Cortland, NY 13045.
